Luminate is an earth friendly music, arts and cultural festival with a focus on knowledge sharing, healing, sustainability, participation and community.
Join us to celebrate the ancient summer harvest festival of Lughnasadgh, mid way between the solstice and equinox.
Luminate offers a broad range of inspiring workshops on sustainable living, health and well being, enlightening movies and documentaries, live music from local musicians and overseas artists with a world grooves flavour, DJs & VJs, tribal drum circle & acoustic jam zone, healing zone, the Flamingjugglepoitoyzone with fire performers at night & circus skills workshops by day, organic refreshments, arts, crafts & market stalls....all set 2000ft up a quartz, marble and limestone mountain surrounded by native bush.
Children under twelve gain free admission, and with the circus skills, face painting, storytelling, roving performers and more, there’s plenty of entertainment for them to enjoy and participate in. With spacious camping, free water, sinks for washing up, solar showers and amenities, all in a stunningly beautiful environment, treat yourselves to a camping holiday with a difference.
Zero Waste:
Luminate is an authentic zero waste event: there will be no rubbish bins or recycling on site! Be prepared to pack out what you bring in and leave no trace. Food stalls will serve onto ceramics or direct to your own plate and cup. There will be a composting area for biodegradeables. The festival site layout and art installations have been designed using sacred geometry, natural and recycled materials.

Luminate ‘09 features an inspiring line-up of performers from Aotearoa and overseas, taking you on a unique, flowing journey through a diverse range of Live music, World Grooves, Tribal rhythms, Progressive, Breaks, Psytrance, House, Dub, Dub step, Funk, Folk, Roots, Soul, sublime Chill out and esoteric beats.

Workshops:
Cover a range of topics such as Permaculture, Dance and movement, Flax weaving, Poi, Sacred Geometry, the Mayan calendar, Chi Gong, Yoga, Meditation, Healing techniques, Music, African Drumming, Didgeridoo, Indymedia, Bellydancning, Kirtan, Mantras and more…
The Healing Zone:
A sanctuary of massage and alternative holistic therapies.
Tribal acoustic jam zone:
A place to get truly creative and musically spontaneous. Bring your drums, percussion, other instruments and join in the tribal groove around the fire.
The Flaming Jugglepoitoy zone:
Offers a daily programme of circus skills suitable for kids and adults. Pick up a juggling ball, club, poi, staff, devil stick, diabolo, hoola-hoop etc. spin it, drop it, throw it, dance with it… simply give it a go. Workshops and the space to practice are one of the creative outlets Luminate offers to nurture that process for opening up to what we can learn, share and enjoy. Talent shows are planned towards the end of the festival – make sure to sign up and show your new skills!
Location:
From Nelson, head to Motueka and then follow SH60 towards Takaka. On the top of the Takaka Hill road turn right onto Canaan Downs road. The festival will be signposted here.
